Key Takeaways

  • ✓Songkran's public holidays in 2027 are Tuesday 13 – Thursday 15 April. Bangkok's street celebrations usually start a day or two earlier.
  • ✓Silom Road, beside the Soi 2 and Soi 4 gay nightlife lanes, is the LGBTQ+ heart of Songkran in Bangkok.
  • ✓In 2026 Bangkok made its official water zones alcohol-free, banned large water cannons and powder, and ended play by 22:00. Expect similar rules in 2027.
  • ✓The weekend before Songkran is packed: Songkran Pride runs 10–11 April at BITEC Bangna, and the gCircuit festival runs 9–12 April.

Songkran is Thai New Year, and for three days in April the whole country turns into a water fight. Bangkok empties of commuters and fills with people carrying water guns, buckets and waterproof phone pouches. Strangers soak each other, music plays on every corner, and the heat of the hottest month finally breaks.

For LGBTQ+ visitors, Songkran is also one of the biggest weeks of the year. Silom, home to Bangkok's best-known gay nightlife, becomes the centre of the city's water play, and the week around it is full of parties. This guide covers when Songkran 2027 falls, where to go, the rules the city enforces, and how to stay safe and comfortable.

Last updated

Last updated: October 2026. Bangkok publishes its official Songkran zones and rules each spring, so the 2027 details below are based on the 2026 edition. We will update this guide when the city announces the 2027 plan.

When is Songkran 2027?

The official Songkran public holidays in 2027 are Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 April. Bangkok's organised water zones usually open a day or two before the holidays: in 2026, Silom Road ran from 12 to 14 April. Many people take the whole week off, so the city is busy from the weekend before.

Is Songkran LGBTQ+-friendly?

Yes. Songkran is a festival everyone joins, and Bangkok's LGBTQ+ community has made it its own. Thailand has never criminalised same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage has been legal nationwide since 23 January 2025. On Silom you will see same-sex couples, drag looks and rainbow flags in the crowd, and nobody looks twice.

Silom: the LGBTQ+ heart of Bangkok Songkran

Silom Road is the place to be. In 2026 the city closed the road between Sala Daeng and the Narathiwat intersection, held a parade at noon on the first day, and ran water play from 13:00 to 21:00 each day from 12 to 14 April. Expect a similar set-up in 2027.

The two lanes off Silom are the LGBTQ+ anchor. Soi 2 is the dance-club street and Soi 4 is the bar street, and both stay busy long after the water play ends. To get there, take the BTS to Sala Daeng or the MRT to Silom; driving is close to impossible once the road closes.

Other places to get soaked

  • Khao San Road: the backpacker street, famously wild, with a crowd from everywhere.
  • Siam Square and CentralWorld: big, central and easy to reach on the BTS.
  • Lan Khon Mueang and Bangkok City Hall: the official city celebration, with more traditional ceremonies.

The rules

In 2026 Bangkok ran 88 official water-play areas and published clear rules for them. Expect similar rules in 2027.

  • No alcohol in the official water-play areas.
  • No large water cannons or high-pressure water guns.
  • No powder or talc.
  • No indecent clothing or displays.
  • Water play ends by 22:00.
  • No water play near hospitals, fire and police stations, major intersections, bridges or expressways.

Songkran etiquette

  • Do not splash monks, older people, babies, or anyone on a motorbike.
  • If someone clearly isn't playing, such as a person in work clothes or carrying shopping, leave them dry.
  • At temples, Songkran is about respect: people pour scented water gently over Buddha images and over the hands of elders.
  • Expect to get wet. If you are on the street, you are in the game.

Staying safe and comfortable

  • Keep your phone and cards in a waterproof pouch. Carry a photo or copy of your passport rather than the original.
  • Wear quick-dry clothes and shoes with grip. Streets get slippery.
  • Drink water and watch the sun. April is Thailand's hottest month.
  • Use the BTS and MRT. Roads are at their most dangerous during the Songkran holidays, so avoid motorbike taxis.
  • Consent applies. Groping is not part of Songkran. If anything goes wrong, call the Tourist Police on 1155.

Songkran Pride: the weekend before

Songkran Pride is PrideShow's Thai New Year edition: a music-led Songkran celebration for the community, with an electronic line-up, on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 April 2027 at BITEC Bangna, next to BTS Bang Na. The hall is reserved and the programme will be announced soon.
